22. February 2008:

Let's look at a typical day in the stable at Langhus in the winter 2007-8.

The day starts by milking the cows, so we go to the horse stable at ca. 10 in the morning.

Then we put the 4 adult horses go out to one paddock to play, and the 3 foals go out to another paddock to play. Meanwhile we clean all the boxes, and put new saw and paper clippings (all recycled material) in them for bedding.

All the horses get hay, which is low in energy and protein, because that fits their metabolism best, especially as none of them is in extremely hard training. All the horses get a mineral mix (Steward salt) for minerals, and cod liver oil for A and D vitamins. The adult horses get a biotin supplement for excellent state of mane and hooves. The foals get fish meal as recommended by vets for a supplement of high-quality protein. After playing in the paddock for an hour or so, the horses enter the stable for their brunch.

After that, when weather allows, we take the adult horses out for training, some for lighter work in the paddock, others for a longer ride out on the trails. After that we put all the horses out in the paddocks again so they can have a good time. In the evening (around 6 pm) we feed them hay again, no supplements this time, and tuck the horses in in the stable before the night.

31. January 2008:

The winter has been mild here in northern Iceland.   We had the first real blizzard last night (15-25 m/sek), that is, there was a lot of wind but pretty little snow.  I did though go out today to check on the herd of horses, see if everybody was fine, if there was enough hay, and most of all I just wanted to see my dear critters.  With -9° C of frost and somewhere around 20 m/sek, it was though freezing cold, and one minute it could be clear and pretty, 30 seconds later I just saw a few meters away.  I did though take a few pictures, so you can see why our dear horses are as hardy and tough as they are, they were feeling pretty well : )  Check on pictures here.

14. January 2008:

It was a busy but fun day yesterday, shows how it can be on our farm.  In the morning we were all on the run to get the morning chores done, milking the cows, cleaning in the cow stable/sheep stable/horse stable, and feeding in the same stables.  We also had to do some fence work and move some machinery to prepare for the vet coming today, then we walked out to the pastures and fetched the horses home.

It was a bright but still day, with a lot of frost (-8°C, brrrrr....), a bit of snow, and an icy shield over the creeks.  The herd hesitated when it was to go over an ice covered creek, and we were just two people with the herd, but then an adult broodmare took a jump out on the ice, and then the whole herd came after her and home to the stable.

Then we took a fast bite of delicious lamb steak that had been in the oven while we did the chores, yummy.  Little Orri always takes a long mid-day nap (2-3 hour) in his pram outdoors, today he got on an Icelandic woolen sweater, wool mittens, wool socks, wool hat, winter overall, sleeping bag and a thick extra blanket around everything before falling asleep, loving the nap in the garden.

Then our vet came, and we went with him and all the horses on the farm got a shot that protects them against worms and lice.  All the foals got a microchip too.  All the broodmares were palpatet to check if they were carrying the foals allright... YES THEY WERE, YIPEE, 5 foals growing to be born next summer.  A cow also got a shot because she lost a foetus recently, then the vet and the family got cakes and coffee.  As we were saying goodbye to the vet, Láki's sister came with her family, more cakes, coffee and news.  Then we went out and put the herd back in the pasture, enjoying with beating hearts and smiles to see the proud herd romping around in the good weather.

Evening chores came right after that, feeding and cleaning for the animals, then feeding and cleaning for the family.  Life on a farm is busy, but I think it's the best way of life one can have : )

13. January 2008:

Yes, we're training horses now.  Both me (Lukka) and my husband (Láki) have worked a lot as horse trainers, but now when we have bought the Langhus farm from my parents in law, we are in the wonderful position of just training our own horses.  We are pretty busy with many things, but training the horses is a very enjoyable time, the time we take to do what we enjoy, to love the horses, and feel how they grow both mentally and talentwise as the training progresses.  So, now we definitely take quality over quantity, our time with the horses is our quality time, and we enjoy just having a few horses in the stable.

The stable has enough room for 16 horses in two-horse boxes, but we just have 1 horse per box so they have room to roll and stretch and feel good.  Now we have these horses on stable (pictures coming up):

IS2003258038 - Unun frá Langhúsum:  mare, 5 years old this spring.  We were just stabling her today, she learned to lead, longe, trailer load and have feet trimmed as a yearling, now it's time to start her under saddle.  She's well developed and entered the stable like a queen, self assured, kind and feeling good.  Father is IS1996157330 - Tígull frá Gýgjarhóli that is 4-gaited but evaluated with 8,60  in main score.  We own a share in the stallion, and beautiful Unun is our first offspring after him.  Unun's mother is Fála Sigríðarstöðum, a 2. prize mare that was a good competition mare in 5-gait.

More pictures of Unun here.

IS2002165001 - Patti frá Kvíabekk: gelding, 6 years old this spring, chestnut, very friendly and sweet with a pompom forelock and big eyes so he and such a cute baby face.  Father is IS1995165864 - Kraftur frá Bringu (many times winner of 5 gait and tolt in all sorts of huge competititons, f.ex. world championships, and has 8.55 in evaluations) and mother is 2. price with 9 for flying pace... so Patti is planning on doing pace racing later in his life... and we'll both smile then, Lukka and Patti : )

Cute Patti babyface.

IS2001258037 - Elísa frá Langhúsum:  mare, 7 years old this spring, chestnut flaxen with blaze, very easy going and calm on the ground, courageous under saddle, but an energy bundle, goey and fun.  She is 5-gaited but with very clean tolt and trot, good footlift and a lot of personality.  Father is IS1977157350 - Feykir frá Hafsteinsstöðum, a world famous 1. prize breeding stallion, father of countless breeding horses and competition horses.  Mother is IS1990258035 - Eva frá Langhúsum which is a good 2. prize mare and f.ex. mother to the 1. prize stallion Sproti from Langhúsum.

IS2002258037 - Dama frá Langhúsum: mare, 6 years old this spring, black, lovely on the ground with comfortable energy under saddle, 4 clear gaits and a heart of gold.  She is pretty experienced now and even though Láki is training her, she is also giving Heimir lessons, he is 8 years old and it's time to start working with a "real horse", and start learning to fine tune his body language, working with reins and such.  Dama's father is the 1. prize Sproti from Langhúsum and we're glad that even though he's in Canada, he´s also still giving us joy through his daughter.

Faldur frá Langhúsum (colt, born 2007) is after our mare Sól frá Skarði, and is a very attractive silver dapple foal.  He is learning the basic handling and looks like he'll become an awesome riding horse.  What a beauty when he floats a round in trot or tolt with flying silver tail.

Hreimur frá Langhúsum (black colt, born 2007) is after Heimir IS1999158519 Vatnsleysu. Hreimur is learning the basic handling and looks like he'll become an excellent riding horse and good for competitions too, he's also very friendly and couragoues and interested in people, and fast to learn.  Can you tell we love this baby *smile*?

4. January 2008:

The saleslist has been updated.

The winter has been good to us, a busy and fun December is over.  It is a dark month in our area, we live in the land of the midnight sun and the winter night.  For the last few weeks the sun has totally hidden behind the mountains around us, in the middle of the day we do though get a few hours of twilight.

Instead, we get a month full of festivities and jól (X-mas).  Here is a bit about what we've been doing:

On 1. December Láki's grandmother celebrated her 85th birthday, and we visited her and met a few dozen of Láki's relatives there for a grand party.

Heimir has a birthday on 14th December, got 8 years old now, we celebrated it on 1. December for his friends and neighbours, and Orri´s friends too, since he celebrated his birthday too.  So, 16 kids came and laughed and ate cakes and desserts here for a whole afternoon and evening, and that was for sure fun : )  The parents also come to fetch them, so we the adults also got lots of friends in for coffe and cakes and chat.

In the school where I (Lukka) teach and the boys (Heimir and Orri) attend, there has been none stop activities all months, tests happning, a couple of celebrations because of the arrival of X-mas, lots of making of different decorations and gifts because of the same, and a lot of songs and fun.

On the 14th December I visited my friends at Molastöðum and we did Laufabrauð together, very traditional, very fun, and eaten throughout the 13 days of x-mas.

On the 16th December we went to Hólar to pick and cut down our X-mas tree, how romantic can it be?  After that, there was a twilight walk at the Glaumbær folk museum, with stories and information about how this time of the year was in Iceland 150 years ago.

On the 17th December the x-mas vacation starts at the school, and school doesn´t start again untill 4th January.  That gives good time to meet friends, love the family, eat good food, sleep, and ride horses.

The Jól (x-mas) is the biggest single celebration in Iceland, we light up the dark season with happyness and electrical lights, and maybe go a bit overboard in it, because Jól definitely lasts for 13 days, and it really lasts for over a month.  And it is so much fun : )

On 22nd December the house was clean and ready for jól, so we called a couple of couples that are our friends for dinner, and Icelanders love kids, these 3 families have 10 kids total, so we certainly got all the newest chat from the adults, and lots of laughter from the kids.

On the 23 December it is very traditional to eat a strong tasting fish called skata in Icelandic, it is cured and smells, and I love it to pieces.  Again I visited friends that had a big party in the middle of the day, all to eat skata.

The 24th, Aðfangadagur, is the main day for celebration, at 12 that day everything closes, all shops and offices, and people go home to prepare the evening.  In the evening the families eat the best food together, and open presents (marked by the giver and the receiver) to each other by the x-mas tree.

The 25th, Jóladagur, is a traditional day for the big families to meet at somebody's grandparents, and we are no exeption, Láki's grandmother and grandfather held a party with cakes and desserts for all the 4 children, children in law, the 11 grand children, some sisters and brothers and their children... and I didn't even try to count the number of people in the little apartment, it was immense and it was jolly.

The 26th, Annar í jólum, then we went to church and to Christmas dance for the children and everybody in the area, lots of songs, and a couple of Iceland´s jólasveinar (jule lads) showed up and everbody brought a cake or dessert, so it was a nice party.  At the church our friends had a child babtised and had their friends for a babtism party in the evening with great cakes and desserts... did I tell you that x-mas is all about eating *smile*?

Ah, then some good days to relax and love the animals.  In December there have been 4 crazy blizzards in southern Iceland, with winds around 40-60 m/sec, we've had still weather and no blizzard, can't say I complain.

Then comes New years eve, and here in Iceland it means good food, parties, beverages, bonfires, and fireworks fireworks fireworks.

On 6th january there is the þrettándinn, the 13th day of Christmas, the day to say goodbye to jól, the evening when the folklore says all the elves travel and all animals speak... but you better not cheat the elves or hear the animals because you will then go insane... a night of magic... and of bonfires and fireworks.

Isn't life beautiful : )

1. July 2007:

Soffía frænka entered our life, a cute little pig that we love to pet, take for walks, feed, and play with.  She on the other hand loves her playpen, she loves playing with the dog, and just generally she loves attention.  She inhabits the sheep barn untill the sheep have to use it again in December, and she has a way of winning everybody's hearts.

Summer 2007:

We, Lukka and Láki, bought the Langhús farm from Sigurbjörn and Bryndís.  All our dreams are coming through, we own a beautiful farm with wonderful nature, and a good group of horses and cows.

28. September:

Silver dapple mare foals for sale.

I have 8 silver dapple mare foals for sale, all with same father, all with pedigree that makes them promising as pretty family horses, with good sweet temperament, lots of tolt and trot, a long thick mane, and very light silver mane and tail. They will be halter trained before delivered to a new owner.

Sire:  IS1984157019 - Svalur frá Kárastöðum.

22. September:

We are busy with changing the stalls and boxes for the dairy cows and other cattle in the cow barn.  It's a good amount of work, but we look forward to a very beautiful cow barn.

Some of the young horses are in the highlands now, but we will have roundups in the first week of October, to fetch the horses, and going to round them up will propably be as usual, a bit of a challenge, and a wonderful experience.

We and our neighbours have already gone once through our highlands to round up most of the sheep, it was a day of fog and only 80 m. visibility, but against all odds, there was though a good number of sheep collected to the rétt (the corral).

29. June:

The climate has been strange this year, with a mild winter but a cold and hard spring.  When summer came, it was thoug wonderful, sunny and mild, and even though everything is a bit late, it looks like it's going to be a decent haymaking year.

Now Landsmót is happening in our area, Skagafjörður, and we are enjoying participating in, and watching, this feast for every horse lover's eyes.

----------------------

14.March:

The exchange rate of the Icelandic krona is very good now, it has not been so positive against other currency since September 2004, so this is a good time to buy a horse.

----------------------

1.March:

The stable at Langhus is at it's busiest now, we have room for 14 horses and every space is filled.  It is a fun season for us, some young horses of our breeding are being started under saddle, a handful of really good competition prospects are being trained, and a couple of mares are heading to evaluations this summer.

----------------------

10. February:

Our 6 year old Heimir is going with his faithful steed Skima to riding clinics at Sauðárkrókur for 4 days every months.  They both are loving every minute, but it's no wonder, there are 60 children on the riding clinics.  On 1. April they will do a show for the adults.

----------------------

1. October 2005:

The young horses at Langhus spent the summer in the highlands, playing in a herd of 70 horses, with thousands of hectares to roam on.  But, now they have been rounded up, and are back home, safe and snug for the winter.

----------------------

14. September 2005:

A new man was born in our family, Orri Sigurbjörn Þorláksson.  He will get all the love he needs, and animals he wants to hug.

----------------------

25. July 2005:

Harvesting of hay for the next winter has finished at Langhus.  That is important, the Icelandic horse and the Icelandic cow live almost only on hay, they are easy keepers, but need good quality hay, with the right amount of energy (high for the cows, low for the horses), to thrive well.
