A day of herding horses |
Here there are pictures from the only gathering of horses where I took a camera with me. It was to gather hundreds of horses at the corral Laufskálarétt in Skagafjördur, Iceland, in september 1994.

Here we are partly surrounding a small flock of horses. You can see a
few riders on the other side of these horses and
youngsters. |

There are around 700 horses that are driven to Laufskalarett corral this day every year. A person becomes small between all those horses. |

Well, lets take some horses!

Each farm has it's part of the corral, so all his horses have to be gathered from the big herd, into that part. Here we see one such farm-part. The horses are usually ushered into it one by one, but if that doesn't work, 3-4 people have to jump on the horse and take it into the part. |

Three man helping each other to usher a grown horse into the right
direction. |

Doing the same with a foal. One holds each side, one holds the tail.

This youngster isn't ready to do it the easy way. It has gotten free
of two men, but the third one hangs
on. |

This one is not getting as easily away. It is forbidden to hang on the
ears of the horses, and they are not hurt by this even though it looks
forceful. |

When every horse is in the right place, it is absolutely neccesary,
and such fun, to sing.
